Eco-Friendly Design Project

For this Eco-friendly Design Project students create a functional piece by recycling an item they frequently use in their daily life.

The unit incorporates research, sketching, critiques. Students explore the elements of art and design through out their creative process. The unit also applies the Common Core Standards, Choice-Based Education methods and standards from the NY Blueprints for Teaching and Learning in the Arts.

In 2013 the New York Times ran a piece on the use of recycled materials in art that quoted Jennifer Merdjan and featured the work of her students.

Jennifer’s efforts resulted in two students winning awards. One student received The Scholastic Art & Writing Award for her Flower Fixture Design.  Another graduating senior received  The PS Art Award with a monetary scholarship for her Corsinnova  corset . In this latter, student artwork was included in an exhibit at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
